Back to the Basics: Building Confident Readers Through Foundational Literacy™ is a practical professional-development course designed to help educators recognize and address the foundational skill gaps that can prevent children from becoming confident, independent readers. Grounded in classroom experience across early childhood, elementary, and secondary education, this course emphasizes a developmental progression from phonetic awareness and letter-sound recognition to blending, reading fluency, comprehension, and application. Educators explore practical strategies for teaching letter and vowel sounds, blending words, building sight-word recognition, strengthening oral reading and fluency, and developing comprehension through probing, open-ended questions such as Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? The course also examines the value of peer-supported reading, reading aloud, silent reading, hands-on learning, student-led presentations, differentiated instruction, family communication, motivation, and emotionally supportive classrooms. Special attention is given to developmentally appropriate learning in Pre-K and kindergarten, including the importance of play, exploration, social development, movement, and rest alongside academic instruction. Rather than allowing race, culture, socioeconomic circumstances, dialect, disability labels, or previous academic performance to determine expectations, this course challenges educators to identify what a learner has not yet mastered and provide the explicit instruction, practice, encouragement, and varied learning opportunities necessary for growth.
